January Activities At Home
Is the cold weather keeping the kids stuck in the house?
It must be time for a fun game of laundry ball!
Turn a household chore into an exciting and active game by using a laundry basket as a basketball hoop. The child will toss, sort, and fold laundry items, combining physical activity with functional skill-building.
How To Play
Set up the hoop: Place a laundry basket on the floor or a chair.
Game tasks:
Toss clothing items into the basket like basketballs.
Sort laundry by color, type, or owner (e.g., "Find all the socks and toss them in!").
Once the basket is full, practice folding clothes.
Add movement: Place the basket in different locations to encourage walking, running, or balancing while tossing.
No interest in playing with the clothes? : Use a small/soft basketball instead. This will help to develop the concept.
Alter The Rules to Fit Your Child!
Ways to decrease the challenge
Use larger and lighter items like towels or T-shirts for easier tossing.
Keep the basket close and at an accessible height.
Reduce the number of items to focus on a single task, like sorting by color.
Provide hand-over-hand assistance for folding or tossing if needed.
Ways to increase the challenge
Move the basket farther away or elevate it for a more challenging aim.
Use smaller items like socks or baby clothes for precision practice.
Introduce multi-step instructions (e.g., "Fold the shirt, then toss it in the basket").
Add a timer for a fast-paced challenge or require specific throwing techniques (e.g., underhand or one-handed tosses).
